Darkness Falls tops US box office
![]() A vengeful spirit terrorises a town in Darkness Falls
Horror movie Darkness Falls has knocked comedy caper Kangaroo Jack off the top of the North American box office.
The film - about a vengeful spirit tormenting the town that lynched her - took an estimated $12.5m (£7.7m) in opening grosses. Comedy Kangaroo Jack slipped into second place with a 28% drop to $11.9m (£7.3m), ahead of third-placed Chicago which kicked up an estimated $8.5m (£5.25m). The news was less good for George Clooney thriller Confessions of a Dangerous Mind, which limped in at eighth place after its first weekend on general release, taking just $6m (£3.7m).
But its studio, Miramax, was "happy" with the performance, according to a spokesman. Production costs were only about $30m (£18.5m) and Miramax made some of that money back by selling off foreign rights to the film, he said. About Schmidt, starring Golden Globe winner and Bafta-nominated Jack Nicholson, took an estimated $5.5m (£3.4m), putting it in ninth place. Stephen Daldry's The Hours - which centres on three women living in different eras whose lives are profoundly affected by the works of Virginia Woolf - took $4m (£2.4m).
That brings the film's total in the US and Canada to $13.9m (£8.5m). Films taking a fall alongside Kangaroo Jack at the weekend include National Security, which took $7.4m (£4.5m), putting it in fifth place. A Guy Thing took $3.3m (£2.04m), falling from the top 10 altogether. Two largescale releases are set for next weekend. Disney is due to release the Al Pacino and Colin Farrell movie The Recruit, while DreamWorks revs up Biker Boyz - an action flick starring Laurence Fishburne and Derek Luke. |
