Romantic caper wins at box office
![]() Kate Hudson stars in How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days
Comedy film How To Lose a Guy in 10 Days has topped this weekend's North American box office chart despite getting a critical mauling.
The film, which stars Kate Hudson and Matthew McConaughey, made $24.1m (£15m) in its first three days on release in the US and Canada. It is the third highest opening for a film in February, after 2001's Hannibal and 2000's Scream 3, according to research group Exhibitor Relations. The film stars Hudson as a magazine columnist who finds a boyfriend and then tries to get rid of him within ten days for a magazine article.
McConaughey plays the boyfriend, who has a bet he cannot make a woman fall in love with him within ten days. The film has knocked previous number one, The Recruit, down to fourth place. How To Lose... achieved success despite unimpressive reviews in the US. The Wall Street Journal had called the film "unfathomable" and the Los Angeles Times said "a too-long title is just the first problem for this too-long, misguided, so-called romantic comedy".
In second place is Shanghai Knights is a martial arts adventure starring Jackie Chan and Owen Wilson and is set in Victorian England. Chicago jumped two places to take third spot with $10.7m (£6.6m) as interest in the film hots up again ahead of the Oscar nominations on Tuesday. The film has already taken over $63m (£39m) since it was released in December. The fifth biggest film was Final Destination 2, which took $8.7m ($5.4m). The thriller, about a group of people dying mysteriously after cheating death in a motorway accident, has so far taken $28.1m (£17.5m).
