Potter star takes Australian role
Daniel Radcliffe as Harry Potter
Radcliffe has played boy magician Harry Potter since 2001
Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe will play an Australian orphan in his first major film project outside the series.

The 15-year-old will appear in December Boys, which tells the story of four orphans growing up in 1960s Australia.

Based on the novel by Michael Noonan, the film will be directed by Rod Hardy, whose credits include such TV shows as Neighbours and Prisoner Cell Block H.

Filming begins in Australia in November - shortly after the fourth Harry Potter film, Goblet of Fire, opens worldwide.

JK Rowling's sixth Potter book, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, is published on 16 July.

In December Boys, Radcliffe will play one of four orphans who leave their orphanage for a holiday by the sea.

A rumour about two local residents possibly adopting one of them causes tension to rise.

Radcliffe made his debut as the schoolboy wizard in 2001's Harry Potter and the Philosopher's Stone.

He subsequently appeared in the next two instalments, 2002's Chamber of Secrets and 2004's Prisoner of Azkaban, and is signed up to appear in the fifth, 2007's Order of the Phoenix.

He has also appeared in spy drama The Tailor of Panama and the BBC's 1999 adaptation of David Copperfield.
