The UN pays tribute to Sergio de Mello who died in the Baghdad bombing

On 19 August, HARDtalk repeats an interview with Sergio Vieira de Mello, the UN's Special Representative in Iraq, who was killed when a car bomb went off outside the UN headquarters in Baghdad.

The interview with Mr de Mello was recorded in Geneva in April 2003.

In the interview, he spoke about his role as the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights and about the UN's role in the reconstruction of Iraq.

He also voiced his concerns about the treatment of the detainees in Guantanamo Bay.

Mr de Mello took over the role of High Commissioner for Human Rights from Mary Robinson in late 2002.

Mr de Mello, a Brazilian, was an experienced and widely respected diplomat who had a 33-year career with the United Nations.
