Colombian army chief says rebels defeated The commander of the Colombian armed forces, General Fernando Tapias, says the army has repulsed a rebel offensive lauched over the past two days, killing more than a hundred guerrillas. In an interview with the BBC, General Tapias again accused the guerrillas from the Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia of using a demilitarized zone in the south of the country to launch their attacks. The zone was set up a year ago to facilitate peace talks, but correspondents say there has been repeated criticism of the government for conceding too much to the rebels. The fighting comes as FARC and government representatives are holding their latest round of peace talks at a location within the demilitarized zone. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service
