Ian Thorpe brought the Commonwealth Games swimming meet to a close by collecting his sixth gold medal as Australia won the 4x100m medley.

The Australian stormed through the anchor leg to take his Games total to a record-equalling 10 gold medals, following a haul of four in Kuala Lumpur.

Only compatriot Susie O'Neill has won as many Commonwealth titles in the pool, completing her set with six golds in 1998.

England's team of Adam Ruckwood, Adam Whitehead, James Hickman and Matthew Kidd won silver with a new a British record of 3:38.37, ahead of Canda.

Australia were far too strong for the opposition, with Matt Welsh starting on the backstroke before Jim Piper took the breastroke leg and Geoff Huegill the butterfly.

Thorpe then eased away from the competition to bring Australia home in a Games record of 3:36.05.

And he immediately paid tribute to his team-mates for helping secure the sixth gold medal.

"These guys put in a great performance tonight," said Thorpe.

"This team's really come together well. Swimming with these guys was just a privilege.

"It's been a fantastic Games, not only for Australia but for all the teams.

"I'm just pleased to have had the opportunity to be part of it."

The 19-year-old also took gold in the 400m freestyle, 4x100m freestyle, 200m freestyle, 4x200m freestyle and 100m freestyle, as well as silver in the 100m backstroke.
