Powell has become known for his explosive batting, which has made him a regular player in the one-day international squad.
Since his debut against Pakistan in the 1999 World Cup, the Jamaican has made more than 50 appearances for the West Indies.
A useful lower middle-order batsman, Powell has only one ton to his name, but crucially over the course of his career he has scored his runs at almost a run-a-ball.
And he comes into the tournament in peak form.
In his last seven outings to the crease he has notched 242 runs off 191 balls at an average of more than 60.
Early in his career his off-spin bowling offered variation in the attack but it is unlikely that Carl Hooper will toss the ball his way in South Africa.
