Hooper: Happy with the Windies fightback
|
West Indies skipper Carl Hooper had mixed emotions after his team's seven-wicket victory over World Cup minnows Canada at Centurion Park.
He admitted to being stunned by the batting of Canada opener John Davison, who ran the Windies pace attack ragged en route to a quick-fire 111.
But Hooper was encouraged by his side's fightback, which saw them skittle the last four opposition wickets in a single over and then rapidly overhaul a target of 203.
"I was very surprised coming up against batting like that, with respect to the Canadian side, and John Davison, you'd have though we'd have reacted a bit sooner," said
Hooper.
"When I woke up this morning the last thing I thought was that a Canadian would have batted like that today."
Hooper was confident the tougher-than-expected contest would help the West Indies in their bid to reach the Super Six stage of the competition.
"It was a good wake-up call for us.
"We were really disappointed after the first 20 overs of the innings but I felt that we came back quite well.
"Maybe it was a good outing for us but we have to adapt better in certain situations."
