Boland Park
Paarl, South Africa

Located just an hour and a quarter by train from Cape Town, the city stands in fertile country, surrounded by mountains and vineyards that attract a steady stream of visitors.

Paarl's most famous recent moment came back in 1990 when Nelson Mandella completed his long walk to freedom after being released from the nearby Victor Verster Prison.

As it's a working prison, you can't go in but you can recreate the great man's exit by having your photo taken outside.

The earlier history of the city is 'celebrated' at the Taal Monument on the edge of town where a monument has been erected as a memorial to the Afrikaans language, which was first recognised there.

It's definitely worth a visit as the spot affords terrific views over Paarl and the surrounding area.

If you like your wine, then combine your time watching the cricket with at least one visit to a local vineyard.

For those without a car, the Laborie Winery is the best bet as it's bang in the centre of town and within stumbling distance of most of the hotels.

If you don't fancy stopping in town or it doesn't fit into your itinerary, then you might consider staying in Cape Town and travelling the 50km to Paarl on the day of the game.
