Port Elizabeth - universally known as PE - is likes to call itself 'The Friendly City' but is also often called 'The Windy City' thanks to the fresh breezes that sweep across the beaches and turn them into sand blasters.
The city centre should definitely be avoided at night, but PE's major tourist draw - its excellent beachfront at Humewood - is considered one of the safest in the country.
This is where you'll find most of the pubs, restaurants and
attractions in town.
St George's Park itself is a short walk from the beachfront and the
beautiful park where the cricket ground is located also contains a swimming pool and local tourist spot, the Pearson Conservatory - a Victorian Hothouse.
Although the minibus taxis you see zipping around are cheap and plentiful, they are probably the least recommended form of transport in the city because of their appalling safety record.
If you get bored of PE's attractions, then a visit out of town to the Addo Elephant National Park 72km north of PE is well worth it.
There you're almost guaranteed to see elephants close up in their natural environment as nearly 300 roam the park.
